Febuary's beautiful purple crystal has been been a treasure since the time of the Ancient Greece. Because of it’s grape-like color, they associated these gems with wine. They believed that wearing an Amethyst stone could protect you from drunkennes, lol. So, the word amethystos in Greek means “not drunk”. Leonardo da Vinci even wrote that wearing Amethyst enhances intelligence and protects you against evil thoughts. With that being said, Amethyst was very expensive. In the 1700s it costed just as much as diamonds. Lots of Royals and Nobles wore it proudly. It even ended up in many country's crown jewels. It remained an expensive stone, reserved only for the wealthy, right up until enormous deposits were found in South America in the 1800s.
